missing douglas

I'm working on a short story involving massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs), so I'm often thinking about them. The first online games were "multi-user dungeons" (MUDs), all text only.

Typing in a command line has a certain charm, like reading a book or listening to the radio... all the visuals are in your head, anchored by the words on the page or the screen.

My first experience with a text based game (as opposed to usenet groups or IRC) was the Hitchhiker's Guide. I remember sitting at my Mac, thinking of what to type after seeing:

You can still play the adventure online, Java runtime environment required.

I miss Douglas Adams. Yesterday, May 25, was Towel Day.

Pictoplasma had an exhibition of characters called "colour me, pictoplasma!" The audience could come in and color them on the walls... you can order the coloring book, too. It features characters from designers like Gary Baseman, Tim Biskup, Büro Destruct, Jon Burgerman, Doma, eBoy, Flying Fortress, Freaklub, and more.
